Contents: LOUD NOISES. The exhaust on my 24v GTI VR6 is shot, so it’s being replaced with a full catback. VR6s may not be fast, but at least they sound like a Wookie in heat. Demo video (from someone else) after the jump.

I straight piped my old ‘04 GTI for about a week. It was great. Antisocial as all hell, but great. I love the way they sound.

Thank you for using the word “antisocial” correctly. Always bugs me when people use it incorrectly.

that’s better than what us Subaru guys go through, people always saying it sounds like it’s miss firing (doesn’t to me :S)

I hope this isn’t quite that loud. I tried to pick one with a fairly reasonable volume, but we’ll see. Having ridden in my friends Jetta that had a straight pipe that dumped out just in front of the rear wheel, I can understand only lasting a week :p

Sometimes I get lucky.

I love the way a VR6 with a good exhaust sounds. I once (briefly) contemplated attempting to swap one into an inappropriate car just so I could have that exhaust note.

I have an 03 GLI. As soon as I test drove it and the variable valve timing kicked in I was sold. I will drive it until it falls apart. Plenty fast and the close ratio 6sp keeps the engine on the boil when hooning. Great sleeper. I’ve caught many faster cars by surprise.

Who wants a cat back for their E46 but doesn’t want to pay $1,200 for it?

This guy!

*points thumbs at self. Weeps*

Yeah, they certainly have some solid kick for what they are. Not nearly as much as a tuned 1.8T (which is what I had before this.), but it’s smooth as all get out and the ratios in the 6 speed are much better than the 5

Jesus, this was like $680, and it’s one of the more expensive ones. It was Prime, so free shipping, too!

Man, I love the thing. It reminds me of what the Alfa Romeo 164S would have been had they kept refining the model. The car feels terribly Italian to me. 3rd gear on a back road is magic.

I had a short bumper Jetta wagon with the 1.8t before this. Great car. Really practical. But the GLI just gives the proper sensations.

And I am about accessibility. I have no need for a big HP car that I can’t enjoy. Check my profile picture. Even a nicely built Spitfire is less than 100hp. But with its skinny tires and light weight, I can totally explore the limits of the car at 35mph. I would never buy a big HP car unless it was only for track days.

They’re certainly an eye-opener in the twisties. With some good summer tires on it, the GTI will go around corners much faster than I ever will. Maybe not the best handling thing ever, but better than one might expect.

And yeah, I absolutely understand the attraction of a low-speed classic. She may be a bit of a slow fatty compared to a Spitfire, but she’s nothing if not accessible;

Yup, thought it was pretty convenient I just happened to have a pic of it next to a Spitfire

Always loved them. I was a big air cooled guy back when I first started driving. Ahh, the JC Whitney catalog. lol! Looks pretty stock, yeah?

Yeah, actually entirely stock. I was lucky enough to buy it out of the garage of the original owner’s granddaughter with only 57k miles on it a few months ago. There really is something different about an air cooled VW. They’re just so damn charming!
